Is a weekday or weekend move cheaper and easier in Georgia?
On this page
On an hourly move within Georgia, the legal ceiling is lower on a weekday, and that is set by rule, not only by demand. The state’s tariff treats Saturdays, Sundays, and five holidays as overtime, so the maximum hourly rate is roughly 25 to 30 percent higher and the minimum job can rise from two hours to three. What you actually pay depends on the quotes you get, since a carrier may charge less than the ceiling on any day. Weekdays also tend to be easier to book. A weekend is still the right choice when taking a day off would cost you more than the difference.
What the rules say
Under Rule 570-38-3-.07(9), regular hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. “every day except all Saturdays and Sundays and the holidays of New Years Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.” If one of those holidays falls on a Saturday, the Friday before counts as the holiday; if it falls on a Sunday, the Monday after does. Before any overtime work, the carrier must tell you about the increased charges and get your consent.
DPS Maximum Rate Tariff No. 7 sets these hourly ceilings:
| Crew | Weekday, regular hours | Weekend, holiday, or overtime | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Van and 2 movers | $196.93 | $246.47 | about 25% |
| Van and 3 movers | $253.90 | $325.73 | about 28% |
| Van and 4 movers | $312.11 | $405.00 | about 30% |
The tariff also lets carriers “apply a two (2) hour minimum on weekdays and a three (3) hour minimum on weekends and holidays.” At the ceiling, the minimum charge for a van and two movers is $393.86 on a weekday (2 × $196.93) and $739.41 on a weekend (3 × $246.47), before any travel time the carrier bills to reach you.
These are ceilings under the standard bill of lading terms; a customer who formally declines those terms can be charged up to twice the tariff’s rates under Rule 570-38-3-.11(5). A carrier may charge less, so compare actual quotes. On a move of more than 50 miles within Georgia, priced by weight and distance, and on an interstate move, priced under the mover’s own tariff, ask how the carrier prices a weekend date.
Ease of booking
Weekends are convenient because you do not need time off, which is also why more people ask for them. Summer weekends at month-end are the hardest dates to get, as covered in when is the best time to move in Georgia. If you choose a weekend, book early, as covered in how far in advance to book a mover in Georgia.
How to decide
- Ask the same carrier for a quote on your target weekend and on a nearby weekday, for the same crew and scope.
- Add what a weekday costs you: a vacation day, child care, or lost pay.
- Check that the weekday quote keeps the work inside 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; a weekday job that runs into the evening also reaches overtime.
- Pick the date where the total of the two is lower, or where the convenience is worth the difference to you.
Comparing the two quotes side by side, with your own time-off cost included, answers the question for your move. If the date is days away rather than weeks, see whether you can book a same-day or next-day mover.
